Bio

Linguist, born Bright Osei Baffour on November 5, 1994, is a talented fusion guitarist, composer, arranger, songwriter, and guitar instructor based in Accra, Ghana. Growing up in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, Linguist was surrounded by music and started drumming in local churches at a young age. His father, Eric Osei Baffour, is a professional guitarist who has had a significant impact on young musicians in Kumasi, and his mother is a church singer.

Linguist switched to keyboard and guitar after completing junior high school when he was 15 years old. His parents initially discouraged him from pursuing music, so he faced many challenges while learning the guitar and keyboard. However, after watching a video of jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, Linguist was inspired to pursue his passion for music further. He taught himself highlife and local church music with the help of his father’s friends and students before meeting his mentor, Sergio Manuel, who introduced him to the world of jazz guitar.

Through Sergio, Linguist discovered jazz guitarists such as George Benson, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Joe Pass, and Larry Carlton. He learned music theory through online research and developed a daily practice routine to improve his skills. During his senior high school days, Linguist met Richard and Richmond (the twins) through a drummer, and their friendship led to the formation of ADASAMMA.

In 2016, Sergio asked Linguist to perform some gigs in Accra, where he was introduced to legendary Ghanaian bassist Bright Osei. Within a few months, Linguist became one of the top guitarists in the country, working with great musicians like Victor Dey, Francis Osei, Kwame Yeboah, Carl Amoah, Frank Kissi, and others.

Linguist joined the WestCoast Ebusua band in 2017 after getting close to keyboardist Mr. Carl Amoah, who gave him the stage name “Linguist.” He considers Carl Amoah, Bright Osei, Francis Osei, Kwame Yeboah, Sir Young, Gaddiel Amoah, and Sergio as his mentors and inspirations.

Linguist is the leader and music director for the group Adasamma, where he originated the HighlifeFusion music style. He wrote the songs “Influence” and “One Step at a Time” for the group. Although Linguist does not always perform with local artists, he has shared the stage with renowned Ghanaian artists such as Kojo Antwi, Rex Omar, Yaw Sarpong, Kwabena Kwabena, Aka Blay, Becca, Bisa Kdei, Stonebwoy, Kelvyn Boy, and Shasha Marley. He has also performed with international artists such as Tom Traxton, Blitz the Ambassador, and shared the stage with the legendary Richard Bona.

Music can be divided into genres (e.g., country music) and subgenres (e.g., country blues and pop country are two of the many country subgenres), although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to personal interpretation, and occasionally controversial. For example, it can be hard to draw the line between some early 1980s hard rock and heavy metal. Within the arts, music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art or as an auditory art.
